"Not without my hammock." - That´s the motto for many this year. Because small and large adventures with the hammock are booming. While some are roaring through the country in their caravan, stopping again and again to chill in the hammock, others are setting off on extensive hiking tours and enjoying a few relaxing minutes in the hammock. The latter in particular is becoming more and more popular, after all the corona pandemic has awakened in us a new longing for nature experiences. If you want to try out hiking with a hammock, you can either go there yourself – while observing a few rules about nature conservation and safety. Or you can take advantage of one of the offers that have developed around this trend. There is more on this topic in the following post.
If you are planning an individual hiking tour with a hammock - for example directly from the front door - you should first know and take a few things to heart: The planned overnight stay outdoors, away from campsites, is basically called wild camping. But beware: camping – and thus sleeping in a hammock – is forbidden in Austria on all areas designated as forest. Exception: You ask the landowner and get his approval. In the alpine wasteland, above the tree line and outside the grazing area, however, camping is permitted. However, the regulations can vary depending on the federal state and country - it is therefore best to inform yourself in advance. Especially in the Mühlviertel, for example, fruit trees on idyllic farms are ideal for hiking and relaxing in and with the hammock. And maybe you even get to talk to the farmers for longer, make new contacts or even be invited for a coffee?
In addition to a hammock and ropes for fastening, you should also have good shoes, a backpack with provisions, a blanket and a first aid kit. Depending on what you have planned, you can pack other things, such as a sleeping pad, sleeping bag, tent, weatherproof tarpaulin, headlamp or flashlight, book, camera, fishing rod, etc. It is also advisable to take a power bank for your smartphone with you , as well as analogue map material, so that you are not always dependent on electricity. You can get this either online, at the responsible tourist office or at municipal offices. The most important thing, however, is a large portion of adventurousness, which allows you to gain new experiences and go beyond your limits.
Not every hammock is suitable for long distances. Because some hammocks focus on other values, such as longevity and sustainability - this is also the case with our CHICO hammocks. If you still want to dare the hiking adventure with the hammock, there are now a number of offers that have arisen around this trend:
Discover the Thury Valley: Anyone who would like to explore the Thury Valley near Freistadt by hiking and would like to relax in a hammock can register at Pension Hubertus (Fridays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.) or in the city marketing office on the main square for a deposit of 40 euros borrow a hammock. In the Thurytal you will find marked trees to which you can simply attach the hammock with carabiners.
Travelling in Saarland: Just hang out - this is also possible on selected hiking trails in Saarland in Germany. The mats can be borrowed from five rental points for a deposit of 20 euros and attached to marked "dangling stations".
Time out in Saalbach Hinterglemm: Another way to combine hiking with chilling in a hammock is the forest wellness trail in Saalbach-Hinterglemm. You don't even have to take the mat with you, the hammocks are already dangling in the forest.
You don't like to lace up your hiking boots, but you still don't want to miss out on cozy moments of bliss in the hammock? No problem! Because even your own home can become a retreat par excellence. With one of our CHICO hammocks. With a cup of coffee in hand. With the summer reading under your nose. Or with your favorite playlist in your ear.
