Tips against summer heat – and why sleeping in a hammock outside is a real insider tip

Summer nights are currently mild to tropical, and even though the windows are wide open and the fan is humming away, there's no cooling down. And because the bedroom resembles more of an oven than a cozy oasis, sleep – if at all – is often only thought of late at night. But before you continue tossing and turning, sleepless: There are ways to beat the summer heat. Some are quite simple, others are almost magical – like sleeping outside in a hammock. Curious? Then read on!

Our 7 best tips to beat the heat while sleeping

In many regions, summer heatwaves are no longer an exception. It's especially stressful when the heat builds up in the home and temperatures barely drop below 25 degrees Celsius at night. However, our bodies need temperatures between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius to fall asleep and sleep through the night. It's no wonder, then, that many people struggle with sleep problems during the hot months. But it doesn't always have to involve an expensive and energy-guzzling air conditioner. Often, small, conscious changes in your daily routine and a little spontaneity can help.

1. Take lukewarm showers instead of ice-cold ones

As tempting as a cold shower before bed may be, it stimulates the circulation and makes us more alert than sleepy. A lukewarm shower or a cool foot bath are better. Both relax and signal to the body that it's time to rest.

2. Cool bedding and airy clothing

Natural materials like cotton or linen regulate temperature and are breathable. This applies not only to bed linen, but also to pajamas and nightgowns. If you like, you can even put the bed linen in a cotton cover in the freezer during the day. It's wonderfully refreshing!

3. Let the water flow!

Place a bowl of cold water in your bedroom or hang a damp cloth in front of the window. This will increase the humidity and lower the temperature. Drinking before bed is also important. It's best to choose lukewarm water or herbal tea.

4. Darkening helps

Keep the windows in your house or apartment closed during the day and darken the rooms, especially at midday. Only open the windows wide in the evening, when it gets cooler outside, and allow for a breeze.

5. Eat lightly

Heavy, fatty foods place additional strain on the body. Instead, opt for salads, cold soups, fruit, and light vegetables. These foods are more digestible, less stressful on the digestive system, and therefore help us sleep better at night.

6. Digital detox in the evening

Screens emit light and heat and stimulate our brains. If you want to sleep well in hot weather, treat yourself to a cell phone-free evening. Perhaps with a good book. Or even better: with a view of the starry sky.

7. Our personal insider tip: sleep outside (in a hammock)

Anyone who has the opportunity to sleep outside should try it at least once—the difference is literally tangible. Outside, the air is moving, the temperature is more pleasant, and the gentle rustling of leaves replaces any sleep-inducing sounds. Gently rocking in a hammock is particularly soothing for our bodies. It calms the nervous system, promotes sleep, and allows us to sleep longer and more deeply. Whether in the garden, on the terrace, or on the balcony: with a few small preparations, the summer heat can be transformed into a mini outdoor escape.

What to look out for when sleeping outside

  • Choose the right place: Find a corner sheltered from the wind, preferably under a tree or a canopy.
  • Use mosquito repellent: A mosquito net or a gentle natural repellent protects against unwanted guests.
  • Remember to cover yourself: It can get chilly in the second half of the night. A light sleeping bag or blanket will help.
  • Have a flashlight on hand: For nighttime walks or just to quickly check that everything is in order in the dark, you should have a flashlight or headlamp with you.
